According to the Plant Protection Department, the glyphosate active ingredients are widely used around the world because of its highly effective grass destruction, but its toxic level has been warned by many countries in the world.
In 2015, International Agency for Research on Cancer IARC under the World Health Organization (WHO) published the ability assessment results of pesticides containing glyphosate causing group 2A cancer (blood, lung, prostate cancer).
Presently, there are more than 40 countries and states that have taken drastic action in issuing legal provisions to regulate the use of glyphosate: No further extension; limited use; banned use under non-agricultural purposes or every area is absolutely banned.
Vietnam decided to remove pesticides containing glyphosate which is absolutely right in accordance with current law and international regulations, under practical situation and the country’s socio-economic conditions.
Glyphosate was registered in the list of permitted pesticides for use in Vietnam since 1994 and had 104 registered trade names (Issued together with Circular No. 03/2018 / TT-BNNPTNT dated 9th February 2018 and Circular No. 13/2018 / TT-BNNPTNT dated 8th October 2018).
“Before removing from the glyphosate active ingredient category, MARD had total solutions in order to not affect farmers' production and increase crop yields, 54 effective herbicides, with biological origin and safe would be replaced, ” Hoang Trung, Director of Plant Protection Department said.
In order to proactively protect the health of people, pets and the environment, do not risk with people's lives, while aiming at a safe and sustainable agricultural production, it is necessary to remove pesticides containing glyphosate from the List of permitted pesticides for use in Vietnam.
In order to implement this schedule, on April 12, 2016, the Plant Protection Department temporarily halted new registration for all products containing glyphosate, and continue to review and collect information and scientific evidence related to human health, ecological environment.
With the policy of protecting people's health, and the living environment, aiming at a safe and sustainable agricultural production and complying with the regulations of the Law on Plant Protection and Quarantine, the Plant Protection Department organized a meeting of pesticides Advisory Council to review relevant reports. On the legal basis, scientific and practical basis, right after giving the official conclusion, the Council agreed to remove the glyphosate containing pesticides from the List of permitted pesticides for use in Vietnam.
On April 10, 2019, MARD issued Decision No.1186 / QD-BNN-BVTV, on removing pesticides containing glyphosate from the List of permitted pesticides for use in Vietnam.
